Greece evacuates about 8,000 people from the island of Crete as fires continue


About 8,000 people were evacuated from The Greek island of Crete due to a fire caused by Strong winds threaten a coastal resort, according to what the Deputy Governor of the Rethymnon region announced today, Thursday.

Maria said: "We evacuated about 8,000 people on Wednesday evening"While south of Rethymnon this morning was witnessing winds reaching speeds of 125 kilometers per hour, according to the Meteorological Authority.

The fire that broke out on Wednesday in Crete resulted in the death of two members of the fire brigade.

According to the Greek Civil Protection Authority, the alert state was raised to the orange level in a number of regions, including Crete, Athens, eastern Peloponnese, and most of the islands of Aegean Sea.
