The Security Council discusses the role of natural resource management in preventing conflicts and promoting sustainable peace

The session focuses on a key question: whether natural resources, especially minerals, contribute to fueling conflicts, or can they be transformed into tools for achieving peace when managed effectively and rationally?

The high-level discussion is titled: “Natural Resource Governance: The Foundation for Peace, Security and Prosperity”It aims to acknowledge the close link between natural resource governance, conflict prevention, and sustainable peace, while emphasizing the importance of adopting a more consistent and comprehensive approach at the international level.

Council members are also examining ways to determine the size and types of natural resources located in conflict areas, and to formulate conclusions and recommendations regarding the prevention and management of conflicts related to natural resources.

Among the objectives of the session is also to overcome the dispersed responses, which are mostly limited to national frameworks, by laying the foundations for a common framework for the governance of natural resources and tracking supply chains, which contributes to preventing conflicts and resolving their causes.

The Security Council also seeks to mobilize the United Nations system, regional organizations and relevant partners around a common vision that makes natural resources and environmental capital a pillar for achieving peace and common prosperity.

The session will be chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Thérèse Kayekwamba, whose country chairs the Security Council for this month.
