The European Union fines Google 890 million euros
Brussels, July 24 / WAM / On Thursday, the European Union imposed two fines on Google, worth 890 million euros ($1 billion), in a move that could lead to escalation of tensions with the United States.
The conglomerate fined the giant American group 460 million euros because the company illegally favored its own services, such as “Google Flights” for flights or “Google Hotels” for hotels, at the expense of competitors in search results.
The European Commission stated that the second fine, amounting to 430 million euros, was imposed because Google did not allow application developers to display offers for free to consumers outside its online store, Google Play.
“After this decision, we want to ensure there is more competition and enable other companies to innovate as well,” said EU technology chief Henna Virkkonen.
