In his first visit since taking office, Guterres arrives in Syria

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived at Damascus airport today on a visit to Syria, described as “historic.”

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani, received Guterres and his accompanying delegation at Damascus International Airport.
This visit is the first by the Secretary-General to Syria since he took office in 2017, and comes 17 years after the visit of former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to Syria in 2009, according to the Syrian Al-Ikhbariya channel.

Guterres is scheduled to meet Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa during the visit.
