The American delegation withdraws from a Security Council meeting to denounce French criticism

The United States delegation withdrew from a UN Security Council meeting on Monday, when the French ambassador began to deliver his intervention, in condemnation of previous French statements that compared the United States to North Korea and Russia in the context of a human rights-themed vote.
Assistant US Ambassador to the United Nations Dan Nigeria said, “A member of this Council feigns moral outrage and acts as if he is lecturing everyone on any topic, whether it is related to the conflict that we are still discussing today (Ukraine), or to issues of peace and security, such as human rights. That is why we withdrew during France’s intervention.”
Nigeria denounced Paris’s position.
On Friday, the United States was among ten countries that voted in the General Assembly against renewing the mandate of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, along with North Korea, Russia, Nicaragua, and Mali.
