"Wadi Wurayah" It received international acclaim and global praise

FUJAIRAH, 27 JULY / WAM / The UAE’s achievement of including the Wadi Wurayah Reserve in the Emirate of Fujairah on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has received wide international praise.

This accreditation came during the work of the forty-eighth session of the World Heritage Committee, held in the city of Busan, South Korea, to constitute an important international recognition and appreciation of the global importance of the reserve as a prominent environmental site among natural heritage sites in the world.

Representatives of a number of international bodies and organizations, in statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, stressed the importance of the efforts made in the reserve’s nomination file, and its vital role in enhancing the protection of natural heritage and unique biological diversity.

Highlighting the importance of this achievement at the regional level, Jad Tabet, representative of the Lebanese Republic on the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, stressed that this session gains special importance for the Arab world with the inclusion of the Wadi Wurayah Reserve, in light of the scarcity of Arab natural heritage sites listed in UNESCO, which contributes to enhancing the global importance of these sites, congratulating the United Arab Emirates on this achievement.

For his part, Tim Badman, Director of the World Heritage Department at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, explained the role of the UAE in preparing and working on the nomination file for the Wadi Wurayah Reserve, noting his participation in evaluating the file proposal.

Badman expressed his happiness at the inclusion of the site, pointing out that some advice was taken into account when reconsidering the mechanism for submitting the nomination, and he expressed his pleasure at the recognition of the values ​​of the reserve’s ecosystem.

He pointed to reports showing the possibility of strengthening international cooperation in the field of species protection, hoping that this dialogue and cooperation will continue in the future. He said that it is necessary to conduct more studies on existing water control structures, to understand the extent to which their management is compatible with the World Heritage Convention. He congratulated the UAE and appreciated the efforts of all managers, local leaders and leadership to support this nomination and join the family of major sites.

In a related context, Luisana D’Amato, Secretary-General of the National Commission for UNESCO in Malta, confirmed that the inclusion of the Wadi Wurayah Reserve is a wonderful and extremely important matter, as it gives national and global pride to everyone. She said that the importance of the reserve is embodied in its environment and stunning scenery, which represent a fundamental example of the harmony between nature, geology, water resources and rare species.

She added that the site is integrated and combines various natural elements in one place, which puts it on the international map and gives it international recognition and protection.

In addition, Stefan De Rocca, President of the World Heritage Watch Organization, expressed his happiness with this achievement, offering his congratulations to the UAE, and pointed out that the importance of the reserve stems from its role in protecting natural heritage, especially in a desert environment, stressing his complete confidence that the reserve is in safe hands after it has today become a world heritage.
