المملكة: The Foreign Minister discusses Syrian developments during a meeting with Astana process countries

Today, His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in a meeting of the foreign ministers of Jordan, Iraq, Qatar, and Egypt, with the countries of the Astana process regarding Syria, which includes Iran, Turkey, and Russia.
This came in the presence of the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Peterson, on the sidelines of the 22nd edition of the Doha Forum 2024.

Developments on the Syrian scene

During the meeting, developments in the Syrian arena were discussed.
The meeting was attended by His Highness Prince Mansour bin Khalid bin Farhan, Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to the State of Qatar, and Director General of the Office of His Highness the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdul Rahman Al-Daoud.

Encirclement of Damascus

The United Nations Special Envoy, Geir Pedersen, called for calm in Syria, saying: “I renew my call to contain the escalation, calm down, avoid bloodshed, and protect civilians in line with international humanitarian law.”
He also called for “the start of a process that leads to the realization of the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.”
Armed factions announced that they had begun the phase of “encircling” Damascus, while the Syrian Ministry of Defense denied reports that they had withdrawn from areas close to the capital.
