Warning of mass deportation of Syrians in Germany after the fall of Assad

The Verdi trade union in Germany warned of large-scale deportations of Syrians from Germany after the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Large deportations “go against the interests of the people and, on the other hand, they also go against the interests of the labor market, at least in some regions of Germany,” Frank Wernecke, head of the union, said in a video interview with the German news agency DPA.
He advised “dealing with the situation with a calm mind.”
He added: “Many of them (Syrians) have integrated and become part of the labor market here and they are important to us.”
He said that Syrians work, for example, in the retail sector, delivery services, or in the care sectors.

Monitor the situation

Many of them became members of the Verdi Guild. Wernicke urged the German government and the European Union to closely monitor the situation in Syria.
He stressed that when forming a transitional government, ethnic and religious groups must be taken into account.
Through his conversations in recent days, Wernicke said he observed various reactions from Syrians in Germany. He said they are monitoring the situation in Syria closely, and are generally very happy with Assad’s ouster.
He added, “Many of them are also thinking about returning to Syria and when they will return.” However, he noted that it is necessary for everyone to first see what will actually happen in the country now.
