Saint-Germain coach Enrique responds to critics: “This is my best.”

Paris Saint-Germain’s Spanish coach, Luis Enrique, insisted on Saturday that the numbers confirm that he is experiencing the “best season” of his career, in response to talk about the tense relationship between him and his players.
The former Spanish Barcelona coach said before Sunday’s match against Lyon in the French League, “Statistically, this is my best as a coach. Even if (the media) criticizes me, this is my best in terms of numbers and opportunities that we created or that our competitors created. They are the best.”
The French capital club enters the final matches of this year’s calendar without losing any match locally, as it leads by five points over its closest competitors, Marseille and Monaco.
But it languishes in twenty-fifth place in the Champions League standings and is in danger of early exit from the prestigious continental competition.
He explained, “I look at everything the team and the players do, and we do not depend on a specific player, but only on the team. I see that the level of training is rising, and that the players are improving every day.”
The former Spain national team coach denied talk of tension in the relationship with international winger Ousmane Dembélé, and insisted that he has “the same relationship with all the players.”
He added, “I am a coach. I am not their father, brother, or friend. I am the one who decides. I have to make the decisions. I have no problem making them, the ones I consider best for my team.”
After facing Lyon, Saint-Germain will meet Monaco in the league next Wednesday before facing Lens in the French Cup on the 22nd of this month.
