Gattuso refuses to discuss his future with Italy after another absence from the World Cup

Gennaro Gattuso, coach of the Italian national football team, said that now is not the right time to talk about his future, despite the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup for the third time in a row.

Even if Gattuso has not decided whether to stay or leave, the Italian Football Federation gave a clear sign of its desire for Gattuso to continue on Tuesday evening.

The Italian team lost on penalties to the Bosnia and Herzegovina team, ranked No. 66 in the world, in the European playoff yesterday evening, Tuesday, after playing most of the match with ten players.

Gattuso said that he is not at all interested in talking about his future today. Pointing out that it is very painful.

He added that what he feels most painful is seeing this group, which has already given everything during the past months, fail to advance to the World Cup.

He stressed that the team deserved a better result based on what they provided, pointing out that talking about its future today is superficial and untimely.

He added: “Here we should talk about Italy, about the national team shirt. This is another downfall, even though we do not deserve this. “We deserve more, and that’s why my future doesn’t matter.”

The Italian national team failed to qualify for the World Cup against Sweden and North Macedonia, respectively, in the qualifying rounds for the 2022 and 2018 World Cups.

Gauzo took over as coach of the Italian national team last June to replace Luciano Spalletti, who was dismissed from his position, and Italy’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup diminished.

Gattuso obtained a contract until the end of the World Cup, which will be held next summer, to be automatically renewed until 2028 if the Italian team reaches the World Cup, which is being held in America, Canada and Mexico.

Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation, said: “I must praise Gattuso. “I think he was a great coach. He really is a great coach. I asked him to be a coach for this group of players.”

However, the question of Gravina himself remaining is also up for debate, and he said he has already called a meeting of the Federation Council next week to take stock.

Gravina oversaw two disappointing World Cup qualifiers after taking charge in 2018. He replaced Carlo Tavecchio, who resigned after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

There are already calls for Gravina’s resignation, but some fans believe that the problem is bigger than that.

“I feel very bad,” Federico Barbieri, 30, said outside a bar in Rome. “The system is corrupt. The football system in Italy is corrupt.” This is not possible. “A country that was made for football and lives for it, and now everything is corrupt.”

He added: “We know that the team has limits, but… not qualifying for the World Cup three times in a row? Sweden, North Macedonia and Bosnia. What can I say?
