Syria: The UN envoy meets with Ahmed Al-Sharaa and Mohammed Al-Bashir and stresses the need for a comprehensive and credible transition

The Special Envoy discussed the outcomes of the international meeting on Syria, which was held in Aqaba on December 14, 2024. He listened to their priorities and the challenges they face. He stressed the United Nations intention to provide all forms of assistance to the Syrian people.
A statement issued by the UN envoy’s office stated that he would hold further contacts over the coming days.
It is mentioned that Security Council Resolution No. 2254 Issued in 2015, it set a timetable for the political transition in Syria, including negotiations on the establishment of an inclusive and credible government, and outlined the process of drafting a new constitution. In the resolution, the Council also called for holding free and fair elections under the supervision of the United Nations.
Geir Pedersen arrived in Damascus yesterday, Sunday, for the first time since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The UN envoy said that the current moment is a turning point in Syria’s history, and that the past dark chapter has left deep scars “But today we look forward with cautious hope to opening a new chapter for peace, reconciliation, dignity and inclusion for all Syrians.”
He told reporters that the change that is taking place now is enormous and in itself creates great hopes, but he pointed out that there are also many challenges “that are still ahead of us.” He stressed the need to deal with this matter in the right way from the beginning.
He referred to his repeated calls for the necessity of starting a political process that includes all Syrians. He stressed the need to Achieving justice and accountability for crimes And to ensure that this is done through a credible judicial system, “and we do not see any retaliation.”
