The defense team of the deposed Korean president denies accusations of rebellion

The legal defense team for ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said on Tuesday that Yoon’s imposition of martial law, which lasted only hours, does not amount to a charge of rebellion, and that the president will announce his position before the court if a public hearing is held in his impeachment trial.
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency quoted Seok Dong-hyun, a member of the defense team, as telling reporters on Tuesday that Yoon denies the accusations of rebellion against him for declaring martial law on December 3.
It is noteworthy that a trial is currently being prepared before the Constitutional Court to determine whether Yoon will be removed from office or his presidential powers will be restored, after Parliament voted last Saturday in favor of his removal due to his imposition of martial law, which did not last long.

“President Yoon will express his position in court with confidence and in accordance with his own convictions,” Seok said.
He added: “The president does not consider sedition charges as a legal concept, but realistically, since the investigative agencies are behaving this way, there will be a response to the investigation.”
The lawyer stated that the legal defense team plans to divide its work into 3 areas, which are dealing with investigations, the impeachment trial, and other trials.
