Members of the Security Council call for an inclusive political process in Syria and affirm commitment to its sovereignty and territorial integrity

In a press statement issued today, hours after a meeting held on Syria, during which the Council heard briefings from UN officials and representatives of the Negotiating Committee and Syrian society, the members of the Security Council expressed their support for the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, to help facilitate such a political process with leadership and ownership. Syria.

They stressed that this process must meet the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians, protect them all, and enable them in peace, independence, and democracy to determine their future. The members also affirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria and called on all countries to respect these principles.

The members of the UN Security Council stressed the need for Syria and its neighbors to mutually refrain from any action or intervention that might undermine their respective security. They reaffirmed the commitment to respect human rights, including the right to seek justice, and international humanitarian law in all circumstances, including allowing and facilitating humanitarian access, and urged more international support for the efforts of the United Nations and humanitarian agencies to increase humanitarian support for civilians in need across Syria.

The members of the Security Council expressed their solidarity with the victims, families, disappeared persons and the Syrian people. They reiterated their support For the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and implement its mandate and called on the parties to refrain from any activities that might threaten the safety and security of peacekeepers and their infrastructure.

The members of the Security Council also called for respect for the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, including the principles relating to the zone of separation, and stressed the commitment of all parties to fully comply with its provisions, maintain calm and reduce tensions. In their press statement, the members reiterated the need to respect the inviolability of diplomatic and consular buildings and personnel in all circumstances in accordance with international law.
