Mexico unveils a new measure to deal with Trump’s threats to its citizens
Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente said: “If you find yourself about to be arrested, you must activate the alarm button that sends a signal to the nearest consulate.”
Trump’s threats to Mexicans in America
Mexico has a network of about fifty consulates in the United States serving 12 million Mexican immigrants north of the Rio Grande River, not including dual nationals and Mexican descendants.
De la Fuente added during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference that the application will also send a message to the person’s relatives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He added that the application will be available in January, and Republican Donald Trump, who was elected on November 5, will be inaugurated on January 20.
Mexicans in America
Trump described the entry of immigrants into the United States without a visa through his country’s borders with Mexico as an “invasion.”
Trump promised to carry out the largest expulsion of foreigners in the history of the United States, by declaring a state of emergency and assigning the task to the army.
The Mexican minister said that Mexico is in contact with the governments of other countries in the region from which the candidates for the American dream come, such as Honduras and Guatemala.
Remittances to Mexicans
A ministerial meeting is scheduled to be held, while the Mexican President said that the government is preparing a document that emphasizes the contribution of Mexican workers to the American economy, many of whom live and work without legal documents in the United States.
It is estimated that Mexicans in the United States sent a total of $66.5 billion to the country in 2024, which would represent 3.7% of the gross domestic product, according to BBVA Bank in a document dated August 29.
“More than 1.7 million families, or 6.1 million people, depend directly on these resources,” the Spanish bank, the leading Spanish bank in the Mexican market, said regarding remittances from Mexicans from abroad to their country.
