About 5,000 hospital health care workers went on strike today, Friday.
The demonstrators staged a sit-in in front of all eight Providence Network hospitals in Oregon to monitor the strike.

The state health workers union called it the largest health care strike in Oregon history — and the first to include doctors.

The Oregon Nurses Union explained that most of the participants in the open strike are nurses.
But in a rare move, dozens of doctors at a Portland hospital and at six women’s health clinics are participating, making it the first doctors’ strike in the state.

Negotiations failed

The strike came after negotiations that lasted for more than a year failed to reach an agreement on employment levels, wages and benefits.

The union described the “chronic staffing shortage” as detrimental to patient care, and called on its members to demand a reduction in workload, increased wages and improved benefits.
Providence Hospital Network said it had made offers for pay increases and was “fully committed” to reaching an agreement.
