المملكة: Learning difficulties require specialized support programs to develop students’ abilities

The Saudi Health Council, represented by the National Center for Comprehensive Child Development, confirmed that the learning difficulties facing students are among the fundamental challenges in the educational process, noting that they are divided into two main types: developmental learning difficulties and academic learning difficulties.
The Council explained that developmental learning difficulties are related to disorders that affect the necessary mental functions that enable the child to achieve an advanced level of academic achievement. He pointed out that these challenges often result from problems in the nervous system, which leads to direct effects on the child’s ability to concentrate and cognition, which requires early intervention through specialized programs to improve these functions.
Regarding academic learning difficulties, the Council stated that they clearly appear within the school environment through problems related to reading and understanding the meanings of words and sentences, in addition to difficulty in writing, concentration, and attention.
He stressed that these challenges may lead to psychological and behavioral effects on the child, especially with his high sensitivity to external influences and the difficulty of developing the sensory skills necessary for success in the educational environment.

School and family…a joint effort

The Saudi Health Council called for strengthening joint efforts between the family, school, and specialized health authorities to provide a supportive environment for students who suffer from learning difficulties. He also stressed the importance of implementing comprehensive programs that focus on early diagnosis, providing psychological and educational support, and designing individual educational plans that take into account the needs of each child.
The Council indicated that these initiatives come within the framework of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which gives education and human development a top priority, stressing that working to address these challenges enhances the quality of education and ensures the achievement of educational outcomes that are consistent with students’ abilities and potentials.
