Targeting Russia… Trump again calls on OPEC to reduce oil prices

US President Donald Trump renewed his call to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to reduce oil prices.
According to the US President, those behind this step aim to deprive Russia of export revenues, which it uses to finance its war against Ukraine.

Russia-Ukraine war

Trump’s statements came upon his arrival in North Carolina to inspect the effects of the hurricane that struck the city of Asheville.
This is the second time within 24 hours that Trump has called on OPEC, which includes 13 oil-exporting countries, to reduce crude prices, as a means of ending the “crazy war” in Ukraine.
“One way to stop this (the war in Ukraine) quickly is for OPEC to stop making so much money and get the price of oil down, because the prices are high right now,” Trump said.
He continued: If prices remain high, this war will not end easily. Therefore, OPEC must act, and must reduce the price of oil, and this war will stop immediately.

Reducing oil prices

In his speech before the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos yesterday evening, Trump called on oil-producing countries to reduce oil prices, expressing his surprise that they have not done so yet.
Trump said: “I will ask OPEC and the oil-producing countries to reduce crude prices. Frankly, I am surprised why they did not do this before the elections.”
Trump’s demands increase pressure on OPEC countries before the meeting of OPEC countries and their allies in the Russia-led OPEC Plus group scheduled for February 3 to review production levels.
The assembly had reduced production levels more than two years ago to support prices, while several times postponing the implementation of the decision to begin a gradual increase in production, and last month it postponed the start of increasing production until early next April.
