For the first time … solar energy outperforms coal in the European Union countries

The use of solar energy in European Union countries became more than for the first time during 2024, according to a report issued by the “Eber” Climate Research Center.
The solar panels contributed to the generation of 11% of the electricity of these countries last year, advanced on coal, which provided 10% of the power mix in the union, while the wind energy provided 18% of the energy mix.
On the other hand, the use of fossil fuels for the fifth year in a row in 2024, down to 16%, with the continued acceleration of the European Union’s energy.
Al -Fahm has specifically witnessed a sharp decrease since its climax in the European Union in 2003, as its use has since declined by about 70%.

The promises of gradual disposal of coal

European leaders committed to their promises about the gradual disposal of coal. Among the 26 countries in the European Union, 16 countries witnessed a decrease in the percentage of coal’s use last year, and half of the European Union countries no longer depend on coal at all or that its share in its energy mix is less than 5% What puts it in a strong position to get rid of it permanently.

The two largest coal -used countries (Germany and Poland) witnessed significant decreases in the use of coal in 2024, Germany recorded a 17% decline compared to the previous year.
While coal use in Poland decreased by 8% compared to 2023.

The increase in solar energy generation

The increase in solar energy generation in Europe came during the year 2024, driven by a record installation of solar panels, as low prices and supplies were provided without challenges in supply chains or geopolitical tensions, in the prosperity of solar panel installation operations last year.
Despite the decrease in the percentage of sunlight in Europe last year compared to 2023, the European Union managed to generate more solar energy thanks to this standard expansion in solar installations.
