The first in the Arab world .. The Kingdom heads the Public Council of the World Trade Organization

The Public Council of the World Trade Organization, during its meeting held in Geneva on February 19, 2025 AD, agreed unanimously to the presidency of the permanent representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the World Trade Organization, Saqr bin Abdullah Al -Muqbel, for the organization’s public council for 2025-2026 AD, thus becoming the first Arab and Middle East delegate to occupy High position.
The one that holds its meetings throughout the year works to conduct the organization’s actions between the convening of ministerial conferences that are held every two years, and is the highest decision -making device at the level of the heads of missions.

Essential reforms

It is expected that the Council will discuss a number of important files during the most prominent period, to prepare for the fourteenth ministerial conference of the organization to be held in Cameroon during the month of March 2026 AD, and to pay the fundamental and necessary reforms in the organization, including the mechanism of dispute settlement, and negotiation on the second phase of the Fishing Support Control agreement Fish, discussion issues, food security and development interests, and the inclusion of many agreements The parties, such as the Convention for the Facilitation of Investment for Development, and the E -Commerce Convention within the framework of the World Trade Organization agreements.

The Kingdom’s permanent representative to the World Trade Organization, Saqr Al -Muqbel, pointed out that the Kingdom’s presidency of the organization’s public council for the year 26/25 comes as the Kingdom is an important leadership role on the international economic scene, due to its weight and global economic position and its role in promoting multilateral trade.

A leadership role in the organization

The Kingdom’s presidency of the Council comes as an affirmation of its leadership role in the organization and its assumption of many positions, foremost of which is the coordinator of the Arab Group to the World Trade Organization, in addition to its presidency in the past years. Commercial aspects related to intellectual property, and the team on trade and technology transfer, in addition to the work team concerned with trade rules In services, the Committee for Commerce in Financial Services, the Import Licensing Committee, and the team concerned with government commercial facilities.

The next has a diplomatic and legal expertise that extends for more than twenty years, heads the Dispute Settlement Agency for the World Trade Organization, chairing a team of the sisterly Republic of Iraq to join the organization, coordinator of the Arab Group in the World Trade Organization since October 2020 AD, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Assistance for Commerce Initiative for the countries Arabic.
