Imposing a fine to reduce global warming in the navigation sector

On Friday, the member states of the International Maritime Organization agreed on global standards for the gradual limit of greenhouse gas emissions in the navigation sector.
The International Maritime Organization announced that, as of 2028, it will face any ship that exceeds a specific end of carbon dioxide.

Global warming in the navigation sector

The European Commission stated that it will specify the fine at the rate of $ 100 per ton of carbon dioxide, with more severe fines in the event of higher violations.
The International Maritime Organization said, in a statement, that these measures, which are scheduled to be officially approved in October 2025 before it enters into force in 2027, will become mandatory for large ships crossing the ocean whose total load exceeds 5,000 tons.
These ships occur 85% of the total carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the international navigation sector.

Fighting climate change

In a statement, the European Commission described the agreement as a “historic agreement to combat climate change”, and said it was “an important step towards achieving net zero emissions of greenhouse gases in the global navigation sector by 2050.”
The pricing of carbon dioxide emissions will generate revenues ranging from 11 to 13 billion dollars annually.
The European Commission stated that these funds will be used to enhance the development and use of zero or semi -zero emissions.
