At least 15 people were killed in a fire in India

At least 15 people were killed by a fire that broke out in a hotel in the city of Calcutta, northern India, the police announced on Wednesday.
The city police chief Manuj Verma explained that many people were rescued from the rooms and from the roof of the hotel, noting that the fire that broke out on Tuesday evening is now under control.

According to the police reported today, Wednesday. The prominent police officer, Manuj Kumar Verma, told reporters that the fire broke out on Tuesday evening at the “Returaj” hotel in central Kolka, and was controlled after efforts that took a long time with the participation of six firefighting vehicles.
The cause of the fire was not known immediately.
Pictures and videos broadcast by Indian media showed people trying to escape through the windows and narrow edges of the building. The local newspaper The Telegraph reported that at least one person died after jumping over the surface of the building, trying to survive.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on the X platform that he feels “sorrow” for the loss of lives as a result of the fire.
Fires are common in India, where building and population workers often ignore building laws and safety standards.
Activists say that the contractors shorten safety measures to reduce costs, and accuse local authorities of neglect and indifference
