The European Union proposes an increase in US products purchases by 50 billion euros

Brussels on May 3 / WAM / The European Union is studying a solution to its commercial conflict with the United States, by increasing American products purchases by 50 billion euros.

In an interview, this proposal, which was presented by the European Commissioner for Trade, Maraus Civkovic, aims to bridge the commercial deficit imagined between the two regions.

Civkovic believes that increasing product imports such as natural gas and soybeans can effectively solve the problem.

The European Union is currently negotiating with the American administration; To secure raising the customs tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, which includes an additional 25% fees on cars, aluminum and steel, in addition to a 10% tariff on all other products.

The United States says that Europe maintains a major trade deficit with the United States, estimated at hundreds of billions of dollars, while the European Union confirms that the number is much lower, and that it is within 50 billion euros, if services are taken into account.

Sivkovic did not rule out accepting a 10% tariff as a basis for negotiations, but he described it at a “very high” level, noting that the European Union will seek to reach an agreement that would eliminate or reduce current customs tariffs.

He said it would be difficult to reach an agreement that the European Union member states and the European Parliament consider “well and clearly acceptable.”
