The election of the UAE representative to the ICAO Council as Vice -Chairman of the Climate and Environment Committee of the organization

Montreal on May 16/ WAM/ Mohamed Salem, Deputy Permanent Representative of the State to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization “ICAO”, was elected Vice Chairman of the CEC and Environment Committee of the Council, which consists of representatives of the member states of the Council.
According to a press release issued today by the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the choice of the representative of the state for this position is an affirmation of the pioneering position enjoyed by the UAE regionally and internationally and its witnessed efforts in the areas of environmental sustainability and climate policies in the international civil aviation sector.
His Excellency Saif Mohamed Al -Suwaidi, Director General of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, said that this election reflects the firm commitment and leadership of the Emirates in the field of environmental sustainability for international civil aviation, noting that the appointment of Mohamed Salem confirms the international community’s appreciation for the active role that Emirati cadres play within the various committees of the ICAO organization, expressing his aspiration to continue the close cooperation with the member states of ICAO and the relevant authorities to achieve common environmental goals.
This election comes at a time when extensive efforts by ICAO to lead the global aviation sector towards achieving environmental sustainability and the aspirations of access to zero emissions.
The UAE has always been an active player in the environmental agenda, as it called for the adoption of cleaner energy sources, especially sustainable fuels for SAF and low -carbon fuel LCAF, and launched innovative initiatives to reduce emissions, and supported global frameworks to combat climate change.
Through his position, as a vice -chairman, Mohamed Salem will play an important role in enhancing the strategy of the Climate Organization of ICAO, and ensuring effective implementation of ambitious measures such as the “Corsia” plan to compensate and reduce carbon emissions from international aviation, and to achieve the historical goal of the organization of reaching zero carbon emissions in the aviation sector by 2050.
