The Human Rights Council unanimously adopts a UN resolution condemning the Iranian attacks and stressing their dangerous repercussions

Geneva, March 25 / WAM / The Human Rights Council unanimously adopted a historic UN resolution on the human rights implications of the Iranian attacks that targeted the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Qatar, the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in a step that was sponsored by more than 100 countries, which reflects a clear consensus to condemn these attacks.

The resolution affirmed its strong condemnation of the brutal attacks using missiles and drones, considering them a violation of international law and a serious threat to international peace and security.

The resolution also condemned violations related to the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, including airports, ports, energy facilities, water desalination plants, and residential areas, clearly emphasizing that these attacks targeted countries that are not parties to the conflict.

The resolution stressed the rejection of any actions or threats aimed at closing, obstructing, or interfering in international navigation, including in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab, as a direct threat to regional and international security and stability.

The resolution highlighted the broader ramifications of this escalation on international trade, energy security and global supply chains, including its effects on the enjoyment of human rights.

The resolution affirmed its support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of the affected countries, and its recognition of their established right to self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

The resolution called on Iran to immediately and unconditionally cease all attacks, threats and provocations, and to fully comply with its obligations under international law.

The resolution also called on Iran to provide full, effective and prompt compensation to all victims for the damage and losses resulting from these attacks.

This came at the request of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to hold an urgent discussion, which was held today at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, and resulted in the adoption of a UN resolution on the human rights repercussions of the unprovoked attacks carried out by Iran against the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Qatar, the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
