Abul -Gheit: Sustainable development is a necessity for survival and a weapon to build peace in the Arab region

Cairo, May 22 / WAM / His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary -General of the League of Arab States, stressed that sustainable development is no longer an option but has become an urgent necessity, a tool to stay in the time of crisis, and a firm basis for peace -building in the Arab region, which is still suffering from armed conflicts and internal disputes that exhausted peoples, drained resources and negatively affected the development process.

This came during the speech he delivered today in the celebration organized by the Arab League on the occasion of the Arab Sustainability Day for the year 2025, where Aboul Gheit stressed the importance of achieving an accurate balance between economic growth, environmental protection and the promotion of social justice, noting that the university paid great interest in sustainable development issues in recognition of the importance of linking the present to the future.

He explained that organizing this celebration reflects the university’s commitment to walking in a steady pace towards achieving the goals of sustainable development in its three dimensions: economic, social, and environmental, as it is the most effective way to ensure a prosperous and safe future for the Arab nation.

Aboul Gheit pointed out that the slogan of this year “enhancing awareness of the importance of sustainability in the Arab region” embodies a deep awareness that sustainability is not achieved through policies and projects only, but also requires societal awareness and a general culture that roams the behavior of individuals and societies.

He noted the launch of the Arab League many initiatives and projects in cooperation with regional and international partners, with the aim of consolidating the concept of sustainability and its integration in policies and plans at the level of joint Arab action and at the national level of member states.
