The election of a Jordanian judge to the International Court of Justice

This came after a separate and coinciding vote in both the association and the council today, Tuesday, to elect Hamoud.
The General Assembly and the Security Council to hold elections were invited during the seventy -ninth session of the General Assembly, after the resignation of Judge Nawaf Salam from Lebanon from his position as of January 14, 2025.
According to For the International Court of JusticeIn April 2025, the Secretary -General of the United Nations submitted to the General Assembly and the Security Council the name of the candidate by the national people of the states parties in the statute.
Al -Hamoud obtained an absolute majority in the General Assembly, where 178 member states voted in favor of his choice, while three countries refrained from voting. The Security Council has voted for all 15 members in favor of choosing Al -Hamoud.
As of today, Al -Hamoud occupies the membership of the court until February 5, 2027, which is the remaining period of Judge Salam’s mandate.
Salam had resigned from his mandate after his assignment to form the government in Lebanon at the beginning of this year. Salam was elected to the court’s membership in 2017 and began his term in early February 2018.
Who is Judge Mahmoud Dhaif Allah Al -Hamoud?
The candidate Mahmoud Dhaif Allah Al -Hamoud is an extraordinary ambassador and commissioner, the permanent representative of Jordan to the United Nations since August 2021. He is also an extraordinary ambassador to Jordan in Cuba, who has not resided since April 2023.
He is also an extraordinary ambassador and authorized for Jordan to the Dominican Republic, who is not resident, since August 2023.
Among the positions he had previously held, a member of the International Law Committee (2007-2022), and the Chairman of the Committee during its seventy-second session in 2021.
Al-Hamoud was an extraordinary ambassador and a commissioner for Jordan at Singapore (2018-2021) and Viet Nam (non-resident) (2020-2021).
He held the position of Senior Deputy Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations (2013-2015).
Among the other positions, Al -Hamoud worked as a legal advisor and director of the legal administration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in Jordan at different periods, the last of which was between 2016 and 2018.
Court of court and the election method
The International Court of Justice is the main judicial system of the United Nations. Its headquarters in the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands.
The court shall be dismissed in accordance with the provisions of international law in the legal disputes that arise between states, and to provide advisory opinions on legal issues that the United Nations and its specialized agencies may refer to.
It consists of 15 members (a judge) who are elected for a period of nine years by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council, who simultaneously vote, but independently.
The court does not include more than one judge of the nationality itself. The elections are held every three years for a third of the seats, and the expired members may be re -elected. The members of the court do not represent their governments and they are independent judges.
