The Sultanate of Oman approves the tax law on the income of individuals

Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, Sultan of Oman, issued a root decree to issue the tax on individuals income, in a legislative move, the first of its kind in the Sultanate, within the state’s tendency towards promoting financial sustainability and diversification of sources of income.

According to what was published by the Government Communication Center in the Sultanate of Oman, the new law includes the mechanism for submitting tax decisions electronically, to be applied starting from January 1, 2028.

The decree stipulated that the head of the Tax Authority to issue the executive regulations within one year from the date of the publication of the law, in addition to the decisions necessary to implement its provisions.

The issuance of the law came after reviewing a number of relevant legislation, such as the income tax law, the value -added tax law, the electronic transactions law, the tax system, and after its discussion in the Oman Council, is consistent with the public interest.

For its part, the Omani Ministry of Economy explained that the new tax will be applied to a percentage not exceeding 1% of the population, while its outcome is allocated to support the social protection system, in a way that contributes to achieving financial balance and enhancing societal stability.

The law is expected to contribute to the establishment of a more just and comprehensive tax system, which enhances the efficiency of tax collection, and supports the path of economic transformation in the Sultanate of Oman.
