Emirates President of the United Nations Office Support Group for Disaster Risk Reduction

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) adopted, in its meeting in Geneva, the appointment of the permanent delegate to the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Jamal Jameh Al-Mashrakh, as head of the support group for the period 2025-2026, starting from August 2025.

The UAE received the presidency of the group from the Democratic Federal Republic of Ethiopia, which undertook this state during the period 2024-2025, to form this achievement as a prominent station, where the UAE becomes the first Arab country to hold this position.

The UAE presidency reflects the country’s firm commitment to multilateral cooperation and support for sustainable development, in addition to pre -emptive efforts to face the increasing risks caused by climate change and disasters.

Ambassador Jamal Jameh Al -Mashrakh stressed, during his speech to the group, that the UAE is full of commitment to enhance its leadership of the United Nations Office support group to reduce disaster risk, with the aim of pushing forward with effective and long -term strategies to reduce catastrophic risks, as the state’s priority will be enhancing international cooperation, and ensuring that the ability to adapt to disasters in all aspects of development. The UAE is also determined to work along with all its partners, to protect the most vulnerable groups, and to alleviate the increasing challenges resulting from climate change and disasters.

The United Nations Support Group for Disaster Risk Reduction is an important platform for enhancing dialogue between member states, supporting the implementation of the Sendai framework to reduce disaster risk 2015-2030, and also contributes to enhancing international coordination and cooperation to reduce risk, and achieve a greater ability to adapt to natural disasters.

During its upcoming presidency, the UAE will define priorities and direct discussions that seek to face the increasing challenges as a result of these disasters, including those whose severity has increased climate change.
