Emirates and Finland expect a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in the field of meteorology and polar research

The National Meteorological Center signed a memorandum of understanding with the Finnish Meteorological Institute, to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of meteorological and polar research and the development of joint scientific initiatives, within the framework of the growing strategic partnership between the UAE and Veneldland.
The memo was signed – during an official visit to the Finnish capital, Helsinki – Dr. Abdullah Al -Mandous, President of the World Meteorological Organization and Director of the National Meteorological Center, and Professor Petri Talas, Director General of the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
The memo aims to consolidate institutional cooperation between the two sides in scientific and operational initiatives in the field of meteorology, with a focus on exchanging experiences and best practices, especially in polar research that is one of the priorities of the scientific agenda of the UAE. It also comes within the vision of the “UAE Point Program”, which seeks to establish Emirati research laboratories in the northern and southern poles, in order to support the state’s efforts to contribute active to the international scientific research community.
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Abdullah Al -Mandous said that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Finnish Meteorological Institute represents an important step towards enhancing the scientific and research capabilities of the UAE in the fields of meteorology and polar research, and we are committed to working according to the principles of equality and mutual benefit to exchange knowledge and experience with our international partners, in a way that contributes to a better understanding of climate changes and developing innovative solutions to challenges The global environment, and this partnership will open new horizons for researchers and scientists from both countries, and supports the growing role of the Emirates as a major player in the field of polar research worldwide.
The memorandum includes multiple areas of cooperation, the most prominent of which is the integration of advanced space weather services provided by the Finnish Institute, which are advanced technologies that contribute to improving the accuracy of climate analyzes and operational predictions, by employing artificial intelligence and analyzing large -scale data, and this step also opens new horizons for scientific applications that serve vital sectors, including agriculture, air and sea navigation, and natural disaster management.
During the visit, Dr. Al -Mandous participated in technical meetings and extensive discussions with the Finnish side, which dealt with plans to establish Emirati research laboratories in the poles, the development of joint research infrastructure, and the exchange of scientists and researchers between the two countries. The mechanisms for supporting field research have also been discussed in polar environments, and joint projects that contribute to understanding climate changes and their effects on environmental and humanitarian systems.
The talks also touched on the process of reforming the World Meteorological Organization currently ongoing, as Dr. Al -Mandous stressed the importance of modernizing international work structures to meet the increasing needs of the global meteorological community. He stressed the need to enhance sustainable financial support for the relevant United Nations agencies, in light of the existing financial challenges that may hinder the implementation of its vital programs, noting that effective international cooperation is the way to ensure the continuity and development of meteorological services around the world.
For his part, Professor Petri Talas expressed the pride of the Finnish Meteorological Institute with his partnership with the UAE, which has proven a firm commitment to supporting science and research in the fields of climate and weather. Noting that the Memorandum of Understanding represents a practical framework for exchanging experiences and launching joint research projects, including polar research and space weather services, which will contribute to improving global ability to predict With weather phenomena and the effects of climate change, looking forward to fruitful and constructive cooperation that benefits the entire international scientific community.
This cooperation reflects the two countries ’keenness to develop advanced scientific partnerships that serve the goals of sustainable development, and support the efforts of the international community to address climate challenges, as it contributes to consolidating the UAE’s position as a major player in the field of polar research, and enhances its presence on the international scientific scene as a country supportive of innovation and knowledge development.
This memo is a new step added to the fruitful cooperation record between the UAE and Finland, where the two sides continue to work to expand the fields of scientific and technical partnership, in a way that contributes to building advanced national and global capabilities, capable of facing environmental and climatic challenges in the present and future.
