More than 1000 organ transplants in Abu Dhabi

On the occasion of the International organ donation day, Abu Dhabi announces its achievement for a great progress in its career towards leadership in medical excellence, through its leadership in the field of organ transplantation and its achievement for a qualitative shift in improving the quality of patients ’life.

Since the launch of the National Program for Donation and Cultivation of Organs and Human Tissues “Hayat” in 2017, 1,090 successful cultivation operations in the emirate have been performed, including 290 operations conducted during the past year.

This achievement embodies the efficiency of the health care system in Abu Dhabi and its global advanced position, supported by pioneering medical infrastructure and exceptional competencies that contribute to saving lives.

Commenting on this achievement, Dr. Noura Al -Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Health Department – Abu Dhabi said: “This achievement embodies Abu Dhabi’s firm commitment to providing global health care. Thanks to its advanced infrastructure, its medical competencies, and its adoption of innovation, the emirate has become a leading regional center in the field of organ transplantation, its impact extends beyond the borders of the region.”
She added: “We invite all members of society to register to donate members within the” Hayat “program. The initiative of one individual can save several lives, give hope to patients, and contribute to drawing a healthier future for everyone.”

During the year 2024, the emirate witnessed 290 organ transplants, which included 7 heart transplants, 142 total implants, 117 liver transplants, 22 lung transplants, and two Benkser planting currencies.
The emirate was able to complete many complex operations in the transplantation of organs, including the transplantation of multiple organs, in addition to the use of robotic surgery techniques, which contributed to raising the level of accuracy of procedures, improving therapeutic results and accelerating recovery. These achievements come the fruit of the efforts of four leading centers in the transplantation of organs in the emirate among the four main health care facilities, which are: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Burjeel Medical City, and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City.

The Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi plays a pivotal role in advancing the progress process in the field of organ transplantation in the UAE, since its launch as the first center for multiple organ transplants in the country in 2017. In 2024 alone, the hospital conducted 241 multiple organ transplants that included the first double heart and lung transplantation at the state level, and also recorded an unprecedented achievement in 2023 by performing the first double -lung implant And the liver in the region, in addition to carrying out the first triple kidney exchange in the country.

The hospital includes the only intensive care unit for multiple organ transplantation in the UAE, in addition to the only and unique lung transplant program in the country.
The Sheikh Khalifa Medical City of the “Burelth” group, the largest health care group in the Middle East, has also succeeded in conducting more than 114 kidney transplants in 2024, and continues to expand its liver transplant program to include adult patients and children, in a step embodying its commitment to providing international health care and achieving the best results for patients. Sheikh Khalifa Medical City is equipped with the latest medical technology, and includes a multidisciplinary team of experts, which enhances its position as a regionally leading destination in the field of kidney transplantation.

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, one of the largest hospitals in the UAE for the complex and critical care, and one of the medical facilities of the “Burelith Group”, were distinguished in the fields of scientific research and medical education, where 10 research shows were presented in international conferences in this field, and won the “Best Research Summary” award during the International Association for Organ Donation for the year 2023 in Las Vegas, the United States. It also recorded a pioneering medical achievement by conducting the first donation of members of a donor with a coffee-19 in the UAE, which reflects its leadership and innovation in medical practices. In 2022, it ranked second at the state level in terms of the number of organs of members.

Burjeel Medical City has emerged as a leading center in the field of multiple organ transplantation, as it achieved a number of qualitative achievements, among them the first liver transplant operation from a living donor for a child in the UAE, and the first total transplant between non -identical blood factions, and the smallest condition of liver cultivation for a child of only five months.

Organ donation can save the lives of many patients, including cancer patients, heart disease, pulmonary failure, hepatic fibrosis, kidney failure, and so on. The Health Department – Abu Dhabi calls on members of society to adopt healthy lifestyles that include balanced nutrition and regular physical activity, to prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, which is one of the most prominent causes of organ failure.

The National Program for donating and planting organs and human tissues “Hayat”, launched by the Ministry of Health and Community Protection, is an integrated national system aimed at enhancing the efforts to donate and transplant organs and human tissues according to the highest international standards.

The program aims to organize donation and agriculture, provide integrated care for patients, and to improve the health, safety and quality of the lives of community members.
