Shanghai Summit – Secretary -General calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza

The Secretary -General said that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is the largest regional organization in the world in terms of population and geographical area, noting that we are heading “towards a multi -poles world in which emerging economies are reshaping trade, diplomatic and development. At the same time, we are witnessing an extensive injustice and division.”
While we celebrate the eighty anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the Secretary -General said we must enhance international cooperation for the twenty -first century and always put people in the first place.
In this regard, he welcomed the China Global Governance Initiative, which was announced today, Monday, and that it is based on pluralism and emphasizes the importance of protecting the international system that the United Nations is in its essence and the international system supported by international law. He said: “Let’s achieve together the promise of the charter, and work for a future of peace, dignity and solidarity.”

Four priorities
Mr. Antonio Guterres highlighted four priorities, First, peace and security. In this context, he touched on the situation in Gaza, noting that the size of death and destruction is horrific and famine kills people now.
He stressed the need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire; And the release of all hostages immediately and without restriction or condition; And the arrival of humanitarian aid without obstacle, and in a safe and sustainable manner. He said that we must move forward in concrete steps that are irreversible towards a two -state solution as the only path to achieve a just and permanent peace for both Palestinians and Israelis.
In Ukraine, the Secretary -General said that it was time for a ceasefire to lead to a fair, comprehensive and sustainable peace – in line with the United Nations Charter, International Law and United Nations Decisions. From Sudan to Myanmar, the Sahel region, and Afghanistan, the Secretary -General stressed the need to protect civilians, promote dialogue, and secure peace.
Second, sustainable development and financing. In this context, he called for reforming the international financial structure in a way that guarantees a fair representation of developing countries.
Third, climate work. In this regard, he said that the Shanghai Organization countries are home to more than three billion people, including many societies subject to climate change.
Antonio Guterres called for double the financing directed to adaptation to the effects of climate change, the expansion of early warning systems, and to build a flexible infrastructure. He also stressed the need to strive to get rid of fossil fuels, while accelerating the renewed energy revolution.
Fourth, digital cooperation. On this aspect, Guterres said that new technologies bring opportunities and risks. Noting the need for protection barriers to ensure safety, inclusion and confidence.
He said that the United Nations General Assembly has just established an independent international scientific team to link science to politics and launch a global dialogue on the governance of artificial intelligence with the aim of giving all countries voting and preventing retail.
