The ruler of Sharjah supports the rehabilitation of theater "Big Beirut"

Beirut, September 4/ WAM/ His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, allocated material support for the rehabilitation of the “Beirut Grand” theater as part of the international campaign launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) aimed at restoring the historical building of the theater in the Lebanese capital.

A representative of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, His Excellency Abdullah bin Muhammad Al Owais, head of the Sharjah Culture Department, witnessed the announcement of the contribution of the Emirate of Sharjah to rehabilitating the “Beirut Grand” theater, which was held in the Lebanese capital in the presence of His Excellency Ghassan Salama, the Lebanese Minister of Culture, Odri Azoulay, Director General of “UNESCO” and Ibrahim Zidan, the mayor of Beirut and a large number of officials, intellectuals, technicians and engineers.

His Excellency Abdullah Al -Owais stressed in his speech the importance of international efforts and joint cultural cooperation in order to preserve the Arab and international cultural heritage and support the continuation of the march of cultural march for all countries to advance individuals and societies, protect future generations and consolidate their roots for a better future that abounds with hope and ambition.

He said, “His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah has been keen to launch such cultural initiatives and extend the hand of cooperation with countries and international organizations, as the past decades witnessed constructive cooperation between the Emirate of Sharjah and the UNESCO organization, which were represented in many various cultural awards and activities, which was keen on the rational leadership in the UAE in order to enrich the Arab and international cultural scene.”

For its part, Audrey Azoulay praised the efforts of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, expressing her appreciation for the presence of his representative in this ceremony, which constitutes a prominent cultural event, stressing that His Highness’s support contributes to enhancing the continuity of UNESCO’s global activity in caring for cultural affairs.

She pointed out that this generous initiative reflects the belief of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, the deep message of culture and his keenness to extend bridges of civilized communication between peoples, noting that the rehabilitation of the Beirut Grand Theater will contribute to restoring its role as an artistic and cultural radiation center in the region, noting that Sharjah has an effective and tangible presence at the Arab and international levels and there is no evidence of this from its leading cultural initiatives He made it a cultural center for all the world’s creators.

In turn, His Excellency Ghassan Salama appreciated the efforts of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, stressing that His Highness was the first donor of this cultural project, which is Lebanese and Arab, noting that this initiative reflects the pioneering role played by His Highness for decades in strengthening the Arab cultural scene, expressing his thanks for his contribution to reviving an important Lebanese and Arab cultural facility.

Salama stressed that the support of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah for this project is not merely a financial contribution, but rather a continuous commitment to preserving cultural heritage and reviving Arab arts, noting that the rehabilitation of the Beirut Grand Theater will enhance the opportunities for artistic communication between Lebanon and the Arab countries and restore the theater as a platform for creativity and cultural radiation.

Al -Owais and the attendees toured the theater facilities, where they looked at his current condition and listened to an explanation from the engineers about the architectural status of the building, stopping at the most prominent departments that will witness the restoration operations.

During the tour, Salama explained to the attendees the historical importance of the theater, reviewing the most prominent cultural and artistic stations that took place in the length of years and contributed to the establishment of an Arab cultural scene.

It is noteworthy that “Beirut Theater” was designed by Youssef Aftimus and his son Jack Tabet (poet and lover of the theater) during the twenties of the last century. The hallway.

The theater was designed in a way that serves the performances of the theater and opera teams and the performances continued until mid -1970s to remain deserted until today.
