A legal umbrella to protect craftsmen’s innovations… regulations that prevent imitation of handicrafts


The General Authority for Intellectual Property has approved a guide for protecting Technical innovations, which protects modern methods such as tanning techniques and pottery formation and ensures the commercial benefit of craftsmen.

The authority highlighted the importance of trademarks in preserving the identity of craft products for ten years, subject to renewal, to prevent their mixing with counterfeit goods and enhance consumer confidence in the markets.

The regulation addressed the protection of industrial models concerned with the aesthetic appearance of crafts for fifteen years, with the possibility of extending protection internationally through an agreement. “The Hague” to include multiple global markets.

The regulations detailed the protection paths for sadu, wicker, and wood and leather products, by merging patents for new technologies with copyrights for traditional geometric and plant decorations.

They called on heritage makers to document their works through the electronic portal and register them officially, stressing the availability of amicable reconciliation paths to settle any disputes urgently before resorting to the judiciary.
