Sudan – A UN official welcomes progress towards a humanitarian truce

In a post on X, Tom Fletcher stressed the United Nations’s readiness to work, stressing the importance of ensuring safe human access without obstacles to provide life -saving aid to those in need in Sudan.
It is noteworthy that the joint statement issued by the Quartet Group, which was published by the Undersecretary of the Secretary -General on his page on X – provides for a set of principles regarding the end of the conflict in Sudan:
Firstly: Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity is necessary for peace and stability.
secondly: There is no military solution to the conflict, and the current situation causes unacceptable suffering and risks to peace and security.
Third: All parties to the conflict must facilitate the arrival of humanitarian aid quickly and safely and without obstacles throughout Sudan and through all the necessary methods, protecting civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law and their obligations under the Jeddah Declaration, and refraining from air and land attacks on civil infrastructure.
Fourth: The future of government in Sudan returns to the Sudanese people to decide through a comprehensive and transparent transfer process, which is not controlled by any warrior party.
In this regard, the ministers called for a preliminary humanitarian truce for a period of 3 months, with the aim of allowing the rapid entry of humanitarian aid to all parts of Sudan, to immediately lead to a permanent ceasefire. After that, a comprehensive and transparent transition process – as stated in the statement – is concluded within 9 months, to achieve the aspirations of the Sudanese people towards the establishment of an independent civilian government, which has broad and accountable legitimacy.
Fifth: External military support to the parties to the conflict in Sudan serves the escalation and prolongation of the conflict and contributes to regional instability. Accordingly, ending external military support is necessary to end the conflict.
The ministers of the Al -Quartet Group also adhered to a number of pledges regarding their future involvement to support a peaceful solution, including making all efforts to support a negotiating settlement of the conflict with the active participation of the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces, and pressure all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and civil infrastructure and ensure humanitarian aid reaching the needy.
The ministers also affirmed their commitment to restore peace and end the suffering of the Sudanese people, as well as their willingness to work in cooperation with African and Arab countries and institutions, the United Nations and international partners to achieve these goals.
