All you need to know about the new “gang suppression” in Haiti

Here is everything you need to know about the new “gangs’ force”.

What is the power of gangs?

It is a multinational mission that obtained its mandate from the Security Council, in a 12 -month first term.

The force, which has a strength of 5,550 individuals, will work along with the hallway authorities to neutralize gangs, secure infrastructure, and support the arrival of humanitarian aid.

The main goal of strength is to protect the weak population groups from escalating violence and preventing displacement that may inevitably result from.

Panama and the United States submitted the draft resolution, which reflects widespread international support for the multi -dimensional crisis that has exacerbated Haiti during the past few years.

What are the goals of the new power?

The basic power goals include the implementation of intelligence operations to dismantle armed gangs, biomass infrastructure secure, and ensure the arrival of humanitarian aid, while protecting the population.

The gang suppression force will work closely with the Haiti authorities, especially the national police, with the aim of enabling Haiti to take responsibility for its security.

The mission aims to strengthen national institutions and create conditions to achieve peace and development in the long term. The United Nations support office will be created to provide logistical and operational support.

What does the power of the gang suppression replace?

The power of the gang suppression will replace the multinational support mission in Haiti, which represents a shift in the strategy.

The multinational support force, led by Kenya, focused on the support of the Hilate National Police with limited individuals and resources.

It was launched in October 2023, and the first batch of it arrived in June of the following year. She was suffering from lack of funding, and she did not publish the total force delegated with 2,500 individuals.

The power of gangs will be larger, more powerful, and with a broader mandate.

Why is there a need for gang suppression?

There is an urgent need for her due to the unprecedented security situation in Haiti.

Reports indicate that armed groups now control up to 90% of the capital of Haiti – Port or Prince – where the roads leading to it, attack the infrastructure, and intimidating civilians with kidnappings in exchange for ransom, rape, and killing. More than 5,600 people were killed in 2024 alone.

Since March 2025, violence has extended to areas that had not previously reached it in the country outside the capital, specifically in the provinces of Aristonet and the center, where 92,000 and 147,000 people were displaced in each of the two governorates.

In total, more than 1.3 million people were displaced, and basic services such as health care and food distribution collapsed.

The Hilate National Police lacks the ability to respond effectively.

Why Haiti is unable to address this problem alone?

Haiti cannot address the gang crisis alone due to the collapse of state institutions, the lack of police resources, and the rampant violence.

Gangs establish criminal governance, take advantage of children, trade weapons and drugs.

On many occasions, the United Nations emphasized that impunity, corruption and the collapse of institutions nurture insecurity in Haiti.

Will the gang suppression force solve Haiti problems?

UN officials confirmed that security alone is not enough to solve Haiti disorders. The country faces multiple crises, as the humanitarian needs resulting from the insecurity and natural disasters such as earthquakes are increasing, the economy is in a state of collapse, poverty and backward backwardness, and there has been no elected government since the assassination of President Juvenil Moise in 2021.

UN member states have stressed the need for gang suppression to be part of a broader strategy, including reform, humanitarian aid, and long -term development.

In short, the power of gangs is necessary, but insufficient, as international support should be just security to help Haiti to recover in a real way.

When will the gang suppression force begin to work in Haiti?

The gang suppression force is expected to start its operations after the mandate of the multinational security support mission on October 2, 2025, although building the new force to reach the target number of 5500 security personnel, in addition to 50 civilian employees, and the establishment of the United Nations Office for its support, will take some time.

It is still unclear, which countries will provide individuals. The Security Council resolution states that the force will be funded mainly through voluntary donations from the member states of the United Nations.
