Mona Wassef, star of the Bahrain Film Festival… in its fifth session

 

Under the slogan “Short Films… Great Stories,” the Bahraini capital, Manama, will host, between October 30th and November 4th, the activities of the fifth session of the Bahrain Film Festival. The festival, which is organized by the Bahrain Film Club, includes five categories for festival film screenings: “Bahraini Films Category,” “Short Narrative Films Category,” “Documentary Films Category,” “Animation Films Category,” and “Student Films Category.”

The management of the Bahrain Film Festival announced the honoring of the distinguished Syrian star Mona Wassef, who is considered one of the most important names in Arab cinema, as she has a rich artistic career, spanning more than five decades, and is distinguished by her embodiment of diverse characters that reflect the strength of women and their challenges in society. One of her most prominent achievements is her role in the film “The Message,” as the first Arab woman to participate in an international film.

In appreciation of the first cinema pioneers in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the festival administration also honors the two Bahraini directors: Ali Abbas and Majeed Shams, in remembrance of their great efforts in supporting Bahraini cinema since the late sixties and early seventies. Their joint work resulted in the production of five short films, under difficult production conditions, as they faced the challenges of editing and sound, but they were able to present films that raise issues. Many humanity.

51 films are participating in this year’s session: 23 in the “Short Narrative Films Category,” 12 in the “Documentary Films Category,” 5 in the “Animation Films Category,” 5 in the “Student Films Category,” and 6 films in the “Bahraini Films Category.”

Director Mohammed Qiblawi chairs the jury in the two categories: “Bahraini Short Films” and “Short Narrative Films.” The two committees include: Lebanese artist George Khabbaz, Bahraini poet Dr. Parween Habib, Kuwaiti artist Faisal Al-Amiri, and Egyptian director Ayten Amin.

As for the “Animation Short Films Category,” the jury will be headed by Dr. Kamal Al-Gharbi, while the jury includes: director Ismail Al-Nazer, Ahmed Al-Bastaki, co-founder of “TWW Studios,” and a senior concept artist in the field of video games.

Producer and film critic Irfan Rasheed will be chairman of the jury for the “Short Documentary Films Category.” The committee includes: Emirati director and poet Nujoom Al-Ghanem, and Egyptian director Mahmoud Rashad.

The jury for the “Student Films Category” is headed by Kuwaiti actress and director Haya Abdel Salam, and the committee includes: Saudi artist Adwa Al-Fahad, and Dr. Ahmed Tawalba, professor of media at the Gulf University in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Since its inception, the Bahrain Film Festival has been interested in Arab films, encourages creative Arab filmmakers, and works to deliver films through its agreements to many Arab and international film festivals. The festival organizes a group of accompanying events, such as specialized workshops and seminars, and also hosts Arab film personalities, media figures, and critics.
