The Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah reviews its initiatives at a conference in Riyadh

RIYADH, 13th October, 2018 (WAM) – The Sharjah Arabic Language Academy reviewed its most prominent global initiatives during its participation in the fourth session of the conference of the King Salman International Academy for the Arabic Language, hosted by the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

The conference was held over three days under the title: “The Global Lexical Industry: Experiences, Efforts, and Prospects,” with the participation of an elite group of linguists and heads of academies and institutions concerned with the Arabic language from various Arab countries.

The conference hosted Dr. Ahmed Safi Mosteghanemi, Secretary-General of the Academy, in a dialogue session entitled: “Academies and Linguistic Institutions: Projects and Initiatives,” along with representatives of the King Salman International Academy for the Arabic Language, the Mohammed bin Zayed University for the Humanities, the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo, the Arabization Coordination Office, the Supreme Council for the Arabic Language in Algeria, and the Iraqi Scientific Academy.

The session witnessed in-depth discussions about the Arabic lexical industry, during which the speakers reviewed the experiences of linguistic academies and institutions in developing the lexical industry and the most prominent initiatives they launched to support linguistic research and enhance the presence of Arabic in various fields of knowledge.

The interventions addressed the challenges facing institutional linguistic work and ways to unify efforts among Arab academies to develop linguistic and lexical tools that keep pace with scientific and technical developments in the world.

Dr. Muhammad Safi Al Mosteghanemi reviewed the completion of the “GBT Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language” project, which was launched by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, as part of His Highness’s continuing efforts to enhance the status of the Arabic language and serve it with the advanced technologies witnessed in the modern era.

He pointed out that the project is considered a qualitative leap in the field of the Arabic lexicographic industry, as it combines artificial intelligence and historical linguistic study, allowing researchers and those interested to access a huge number of Arabic language words with the ability to write and read texts and convert them into visual clips, in addition to the feature of continuous updating of the dictionary through cooperation between the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah and the Emirates Researchers Center for Research and Studies.

Mosteghanemi spoke about the Sharjah Award for Linguistic and Lexical Studies, which was launched by the Academy with the support of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, stressing that it is a pioneering research platform that encourages specialized studies in language sciences and lexicography. He explained that the award, which is granted annually in the two axes of linguistic and lexical studies, has contributed to motivating Arab researchers to develop linguistic analysis methods and explore new horizons in the lexical industry. The Arab Library presented a large collection of pioneering and unprecedented studies.
