Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi and"Google Cloud" To cooperate in the field of innovation and digital transformation

DUBAI, 17th October, 2018 (WAM) – The Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi and Google Cloud today signed a memorandum of understanding to explore areas of strategic cooperation with the aim of benefiting from Google Cloud’s cloud capabilities to support efforts to develop digital transformation and innovation at the level of the energy sector in the emirate.

The signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding on the sidelines of the GITEX Global 2025 exhibition was attended by His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi.

The memorandum was signed by Her Excellency Engineer Shaima Abdullah Al-Mulla, Executive Director of the Consumer Protection, Licensing, Compliance and Business Continuity Sector at the Department of Energy, and Abdul Rahman Al-Dhaiban, General Manager of Google Cloud for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa.

The MoU aims to establish a framework for cooperation and identify mutually beneficial projects. This initial framework will support the exchange of knowledge and best practices in key technology areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud computing. On this occasion, His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Humaid Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, said: “Our partnership with Google Cloud constitutes a pivotal step in the digital transformation process of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and an essential support for the sustainability of the energy and water systems and their readiness for the future. By benefiting from the global expertise enjoyed by Google Cloud and applying the best practices followed in the sector, we are working to expand the scope of “Using artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies, which contributes to enhancing the reliability of systems, reducing costs, and accelerating the integration of clean energy sources into the local network.”

For his part, Abdul Rahman Al-Dhaiban, General Manager of Google Cloud for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa region, said: “We are proud to sign the memorandum of understanding with the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi to work together to develop a roadmap for innovation in the energy sector. During the first phase, we will focus on exploring how secure and smart Google Cloud cloud technologies can contribute, especially in the fields of artificial intelligence and learning.” The machine contributes to supporting the Department of Energy’s vision towards a more flexible and sustainable future for the energy sector.” The memorandum of understanding establishes a working relationship and partnership aimed at addressing the main challenges in the energy sector. The scope of potential cooperation, according to the memorandum, includes five main areas: “digital transformation, data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, energy and water efficiency and conservation, capacity building, competency development, innovation, and scientific research promotion.”

The terms of the memorandum include exploring areas of potential cooperation to benefit from Google Cloud cloud technologies to manage and analyze big data, thus enhancing the ability to make data-based decisions regarding network management, predicting demand levels, and improving the efficiency of resource use.

This potential cooperation seeks to increase the efficiency and reliability of infrastructure through the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning models, including predictive maintenance of power generation plants and transmission and distribution networks, and improving the performance of renewable energy assets and maximizing their utilization.

According to the memorandum, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and Google Cloud intend to expand their cooperation in the field of pilot projects by focusing on solutions that contribute to supporting the future of the energy sector in the emirate.

Through this cooperation, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy and Google Cloud will work to study potential opportunities to build capabilities and competencies through training programs, workshops, and knowledge exchange sessions, focusing on vital topics such as artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity.
