Putin wants to “end the war” in Ukraine
US President Donald Trump said today that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, wants to end the war in Ukraine, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Moscow seeks to continue its invasion of his country.
Trump said, during a meeting with Zelensky at the White House: “I believe that President Putin wants to end the war,” after Zelensky said that the Russian president “is not ready” for peace.
Zelensky stressed that Trump now has the “momentum” to stop the conflict between Russia and Ukraine after reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Zelensky arrived at the White House, earlier today, on a visit of great importance, during which he is expected to push the US President for approval to provide him with long-range Tomahawk missiles capable of targeting the Russian interior, according to what Agence France-Presse reported.
This meeting comes a day after Trump’s surprise announcement of a new summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky told Trump, “Ukraine needs Tomahawk missiles, and we can provide America with drones.” Trump said that America is interested in Ukrainian drones, and that he will talk to Zelensky about Tomahawk missiles, but he hopes that Ukraine does not need these missiles.
Trump explained to reporters: “We hope they don’t need it.” “We hope they will be able to get out of the war without even thinking about Tomahawk missiles.”
