المملكة: Green initiatives and international decisions… Saudi Arabia shapes the global environmental future

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia affirmed its continued leadership role in supporting international initiatives aimed at combating land degradation and drought, and working to enhance Climate Change of the G20 countries, which was held on October 16 and 17 in Cape Town, the Republic of South Africa, with a high-level delegation headed by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture for the Environment, Dr. Osama Fakih, within the framework of continuous cooperation between the countries of the group, to discuss ways to enhance international cooperation to confront global environmental challenges, and enhance the protection of ecosystems around the world.

During his speech, Dr. Fakiha pointed out the pioneering role adopted by the Kingdom to enhance environmental protection, at the national, regional, and international levels, through the launch of His Highness the Crown Prince – may God protect him – the Green Saudi Arabia and Green Middle East initiatives, and the adoption of the National Environment Strategy.
In addition to the expansion of Afforestation, combating desertification, rehabilitating lands, and increasing the area of protected areas by more than 400%.
In addition to reviewing the Kingdom’s distinguished role in the G20, by launching the Global Initiative to Reduce Land Degradation, and the Global Coral Reef Initiative that the Kingdom launched during its presidency of the G20 in 2020.
He added that the Kingdom It brought about a qualitative shift in addressing and discussing international environmental issues, by hosting the sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), in the capital, Riyadh, in late 2024 AD, which enjoyed the largest international participation in this agreement since its adoption.
Combat Climate Change
The conference also adopted many important decisions, through the Riyadh Declaration, It came out with more than 35 international resolutions. To enhance the preservation of agricultural lands and pasture lands, the role of local communities, research, development and innovation, and other outcomes.
In addition to launching about 40 initiatives within the Riyadh agenda, the most prominent of which is the Riyadh Global Partnership Initiative for Resilience in the Face of Drought, which aims to strengthen international efforts to combat drought.
