The first reaction from the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the table tennis crisis

Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, Minister of Youth and Sports, congratulated the Egyptian table tennis team on the historic achievement of winning all the men’s and women’s competitions, achieving the African Championship title held in Tunisia, and qualifying for the World Championship scheduled to be held in London 2026, in a major achievement added to the Egyptian sports record full of achievements.

In a related context, the Minister of Youth and Sports closely followed all Decisions and procedures issued by the Egyptian Table Tennis Federation regarding the crisis that broke out between the national team players Omar Asr and Mahmoud Ashraf during their participation in the tournament.

Dr. Ashraf Sobhi stressed that commitment and discipline are the basis for representing Egypt in foreign forums, in a manner befitting the name and status of Egyptian sports.

The Minister of Youth and Sports confirmed that the Ministry is following up the situation. In a precise manner, it is in full coordination with the Egyptian Olympic Committee and the Egyptian Table Tennis Federation to follow up on the results of the investigations and the circumstances of the incident, and to take appropriate decisions that ensure maintaining the discipline of the system and respecting sporting values and ethics.
