Russell wins the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix sprint race

Mercedes driver George Russell was able to fend off the attack of two fast-moving Ferraris, to win the Chinese Grand Prix sprint race today, and extend his lead in the Formula 1 World Championship to 11 points.
The Briton started from first place at the Shanghai International Circuit, and finished the race ahead of the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, after the safety car entered late in the 19-lap race.
Russell won the Australian Grand Prix, which opened the season early last week, where the Mercedes team occupied the first two positions.
Leclerc finished the race 0.674 seconds behind Russell after an early battle with Hamilton, with Ferrari occupying second and third places in a Formula 1 race for the first time since the end of 2024.
Hamilton and Russell competed for the lead early in the race, and exchanged the lead four times in the first five laps, before the Mercedes driver made a decisive move that secured him the eight points available to the winner of the speed race.
Current world champion Lando Norris, driver of McLaren, ranked fourth, while Kimi Antonelli, driver of Mercedes, came fifth after receiving a penalty adding 10 seconds to his time after colliding with Ishaq Hajjar, driver of Red Bull, on the opening lap.
Oscar Piastri, driver of McLaren, came in sixth place, ahead of Liam Lawson, driver of Racing Bulls, and Oliver Biermann, driver of Haas, took the final point in the speed race by occupying eighth place.
Russell now leads the standings with 33 points, while Antonelli and Leclerc are tied with 22 points each, while Hamilton has 18 points.
