4 deaths and 158 injuries in traffic accidents in Fujairah within 8 months

From the beginning of this year until the end of August, the Emirate of Fujairah witnessed 8,296 traffic accidents, resulting in four deaths, while the number of injured people reached 158, whose injuries varied between severe, moderate and minor.

A recent traffic statistic, a copy of which was obtained by Emirates Today, showed that March topped the month with 1,142 accidents, followed by May with 1,137 accidents, then April with 1,071 accidents, while July witnessed the lowest accident rate with 912 accidents.

The data showed that one death was recorded in each of February, March, May and July, while the months of January, April, June and August were free of any traffic deaths, while the statistics showed that the number of injuries reached its peak in the months of January and February with 26 injuries each, compared to a noticeable decrease in August to 12 injuries, which reflects a gradual improvement in traffic behavior and drivers’ compliance with traffic laws.

For its part, the Fujairah Police General Command, represented by the Traffic and Patrols Department, confirmed that the most prominent causes of serious accidents are due to sudden deviation, running a red light, not leaving enough distance between vehicles, and not adhering to the lane, calling on drivers to be vigilant and attentive while driving to avoid accidents and the resulting human and material losses.

In an effort to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce accidents on vital roads, and as part of these efforts, the Traffic and Patrols Department at the Fujairah Police General Command announced the implementation of a project for five new pedestrian traffic lights on major streets in the city of Fujairah, in coordination with the Department of Public Works and Agriculture of the Fujairah Government, bringing the total number of traffic lights allocated for pedestrians to 10 signals.

She explained that the project comes in continuation of the success achieved with the completion and opening of five previous crossings, including four currently operating on Sheikh Saif bin Hamad Al Sharqi Street (formerly Al Maarad), and another crossing on Al Sharqi Street opposite the Department of Residency and Foreigners Affairs. She added that the department has begun implementing five new crossings with traffic lights, including two crossings on the Corniche Street, the first at the Fujairah Marine Sports Club, and the second opposite the Sea Resort Hotel, in addition to a crossing on Sheikh Zayed Road, serving the Emirates Mall, and two other crossings in Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed City, anticipating the completion of its construction work during the coming period.

She pointed out that this step comes as part of ongoing efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and regulate traffic in vital areas in the emirate.
