Portugal is showcasing in Dubai its plan to transform Guimarães into… "European Green Capital 2026"

Dubai, 27 October / WAM / Portugal, during its participation in the “Asia-Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors Forum 2025” in Dubai, reviewed its ambitious plan for green transformation, represented by the experience of the pioneering city of Guimarães.
Francisco Carvalho, General Coordinator of Research and Innovation at the Landscape Laboratory in Guimarães, announced in a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that the city is moving steadily towards becoming the “European Green Capital of 2026” and achieving climate neutrality by 2030.
Carvalho explained that the city launched the “Landscape Laboratory” in cooperation with two Portuguese universities, to be an applied research institution that supports green transformation efforts, builds community capabilities, and promotes environmental education.
He said that the laboratory is working on various projects that include biodiversity, the circular economy, and climate action, and cooperates with small and medium-sized companies to monitor their environmental performance, with the aim of reaching an “environmentally positive” city by 2050.
Carvalho added that Guimarães participates in European and international city networks to exchange knowledge, stressing that its experience represents an inspiring European model that can be emulated globally to prove that the transition towards carbon neutral cities is an achievable goal.
In addition to this presentation, Haider Al-Khudari, Secretary-General and CEO of the Arab-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stressed that the Chamber’s participation in the summit reflects its keenness to enhance trade and investment cooperation between Portugal and Arab countries.
Al-Khudari explained to WAM that a Portuguese delegation that includes companies operating in the fields of infrastructure, renewable energy, construction, hotel, healthcare, and pharmaceutical industries is participating in the summit to explore opportunities for cooperation with their Emirati and Arab counterparts.
He added that the Chamber represents a link between the public and private sectors in 22 Arab countries and Portugal, and works under the umbrella of the Union of Arab Chambers and within the Arab League system, noting that its role is to support partnerships and facilitate the exchange of investments.
Al-Khudari stressed that the current participation is taking place in cooperation with the Chambers of Commerce in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, with the aim of expanding the horizons of partnership, considering the forum an important platform for opening new channels of cooperation that serve common interests.
