Greece showcases its literary and creative experience"Sharjah Book Fair 2025"

Sharjah, 28 October / WAM / This year, the “Sharjah International Book Fair” celebrates Greece as the guest of honor in its 44th session, which will be held from 5 to 16 November next at the “Expo Center Sharjah”, to host one of the most ancient artistic and literary cultures in the world, providing visitors with a diverse cultural experience within an integrated program that includes literature, theatre, music and culinary arts, in honor of Greece’s contribution to Enriching global civilization.

Greece participates in the exhibition with a special national pavilion covering an area of ​​200 square meters, inspired by the aesthetics of classical Greek architecture, hosting 58 Greek publishers and cultural institutions, 28 of whom will attend, and displaying 600 titles in the Greek language and international languages ​​translated from them.

The pavilion includes a sculpture of an olive tree, which symbolizes flexibility, peace, and wisdom, and a space to host readers, writers, and thinkers.

The guest of honor program includes an exhibition entitled “Greek Literature: The Long Journey,” which reviews the development of the Greek language and its literature from pre-Christian times to the present day and sheds light on the contribution of Greek writers, poets, thinkers and philosophers in shaping the national identity of Greece and their influence on the global cultural and literary scene.

The exhibition’s guest of honor program, Greece, witnesses the participation of more than 70 prominent Greek figures, including prominent writers, poets, translators, painters and academics, in addition to musicians, librarians and publishers, who will contribute to enriching the agenda of the cultural and professional programs during the exhibition.

The list of participants includes 10 writers, poets and playwrights, including Antonios Skiathas, Eugenia Douglas, Euripides Garantoudis, Kostantinos Katsoularis, Birsa Komotsi, Panagiotis Mendis, Danai Siosou and Anastasia Venetoli, presenting a group of poetry evenings and dialogue sessions that explore the contemporary literary scene in Greece. The importance of translation between Arabic and Greek and the continued global influence of the Greek literary and philosophical heritage.

Greece has also prepared a series of translations of Greek works into Arabic, including translations of selections of works that won national awards for poetry and short stories, in addition to translations of contemporary poetic monodramas.

Visitors to the Sharjah International Book Fair 2025 will have the opportunity to enjoy Greek performing arts through a touring theatrical show organized by Dr. Anastasia Georgaki, Head of the Department of Music Studies at the National University of Athens. The show combines poetry, music, and expressive movement, providing the audience with an integrated interactive experience.

This show is complemented by a theatrical musical performance inspired by Greek poetry presented by Nikolaos Platanos and Kyriaki Vlakhoianni during the opening day, where the exhibition audience watches a powerful theatrical work inspired by the poems of the poet Yiannis Ritsos, one of the most prominent Greek poets of the twentieth century and nicknamed “the poet of the windows opened to the Greek epics,” which enriches the cultural aspect of the program.

The program includes a group of interactive workshops, including the “Life and Writing Workshop,” presented by Emilia Pantona and Mata Gavroglou, to introduce young people to the creativity and symbolism of the Greek heritage, during which it combines the “Phaestos Tablet” and contemporary imagination. The program also includes joint sessions between Greek and Emirati writers, publishers, and translators, which expands the scope of cultural dialogue and opens a window to the world for visitors. Greek.

With the Greek chef Alexandros Spirkhos, the “Culinary Corner” showcases the art of Greek cuisine, presenting recipes that combine authenticity and innovation, emphasizing the close relationship between cuisine and Greek heritage.

Greece’s participation extends beyond just a cultural celebration, as it includes professional interaction and participation in the 15th session of the “Publishers Conference,” which is held prior to the start of the exhibition and brings together Greek publishers and their counterparts from more than 70 countries in sessions and dialogues that shape the future of the global publishing industry. Greece also participates in the “Library Conference,” which focuses on innovation in library sciences and promoting the culture of reading.

The Sharjah Book Authority is organizing the 44th session of the Sharjah Book Fair with the participation of 2,350 publishers from 118 countries and presenting a cultural program filled with more than 1,200 events. The Greece Guest of Honor program not only celebrates the ancient Greek cultural and literary heritage, but also confirms its role as a bridge linking the East and the West and enhances its continuing influence on international arts and literature.
