Saudi-Malaysian bilateral relations have developed over the past decades, and culminated in the year 2021 AD with the signing of the minutes of establishing the Saudi-Malaysian Coordination Council, in the presence of His Highness the Crown Prince – may God protect him – and the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Muhyiddin Yassin, in an important step to raise the relations of the two countries to the level of strategic partnership in all fields, in light of the elements they enjoy of economic strength and international standing, as the Kingdom views Malaysia as an important economic partner, as its economy is the fourth largest economy in the southern region. The Saudi-Malaysian Coordination Council

The Saudi-Malaysian Coordination Council launched its work by holding its first meeting in Riyadh, in December of last year (2024 AD), headed by His Highness the Minister of Foreign Affairs and his Malaysian counterpart.

The Council and its subcommittees seek to contribute to the development of partnership and cooperation in the economic, trade and investment fields, in a way that lives up to the aspirations of the leadership of the two countries.

/>Trade relations between the Kingdom and Malaysia have witnessed remarkable development, as the volume of trade exchange between the two countries during the year 2024 AD until the middle of the year 2025 AD amounted to about 13 billion dollars.

The trade balance is tilted in favor of the Kingdom, as the value of Saudi exports to Malaysia amounted to 10 billion dollars, while the value of its imports from Malaysia amounted to about 3 billion dollars, and the Kingdom ranks ninth in the world among the countries exporting to Malaysia.

Cooperation in the field Energy

Cooperation between the Kingdom and Malaysia in the field of energy has been characterized by remarkable development, as Saudi Aramco and Malaysian Petronas launched two joint projects that included the establishment of a refinery and an integrated petrochemical complex in Malaysia.

In May of this year (2025), Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority to explore power generation opportunities with a capacity of up to 12.5 gigawatts by the year 2040. And initial investments valued at $10 billion.

The Kingdom enjoys great respect among all Malaysian official and popular circles, based on Islamic ties and the solid foundations of relations between the two countries and the two brotherly peoples. The Malaysian leadership is also interested in strengthening its relationship with the Kingdom, and considers it a strategic partner in the Islamic world.
