What are the main causes of traffic congestion in the country and how can they be addressed?

The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, explained that one of the most prominent causes of traffic congestion is the significant growth in the number of vehicles, which exceeded 8% annually compared to the global average of 2%, in addition to the dependence of individuals on private vehicles and the convergence of working hours in institutions and schools, in addition to the increasing population growth.
He stressed that the Ministry has identified a series of plans and mechanisms with the aim of addressing the challenges of traffic density in coordination and integration with local authorities, including updating current policies and legislation related to traffic congestion and the growth of the number of vehicles, encouraging the transition to public and smart transport, strengthening the current road axes linking the emirates through national projects at the local and federal levels, studying the development of new road axes linking the emirates of the country according to the highest specifications and capacity, in addition to studying the promotion of mass transit projects and their integration between the emirates of the country and developing modes. Public transportation encourages directing movement through it and reducing the use of private vehicles.
He stated that the Ministry adopts an integrated strategic approach in addressing traffic congestion, and adopts innovative solutions and smart technologies that contribute to improving the efficiency of traffic movement, pointing out the presence of an integrated center to monitor traffic around the clock to analyze the causes of congestion and suggest appropriate solutions.
This came during a session entitled “What are the latest developments in the traffic congestion file?”, as part of the annual meetings of the UAE government 2025, which are being held in the capital, Abu Dhabi.
