Abu Dhabi, November 12 / WAM / Yesterday, Burjeel Medical City and the Emirates Thalassemia Society signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in patient care, community participation, and public awareness for thalassemia patients.
The memorandum was signed at the Burjeel Medical City headquarters in Mohammed bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, on behalf of the Emirates Thalassemia Society by Dr. Khaled Yousef Al Khouri, member of the Society’s Board of Trustees and director of the headquarters in Abu Dhabi, while it was signed on behalf of Burjeel by John Sunil, CEO of Burjeel Holding.
Under the MoU, the two parties will cooperate in the areas of healthcare and patient-focused support, in addition to community awareness initiatives, and Burjeel Medical City will provide a dedicated annual care package for blood transfusion-dependent thalassemia patients referred by the Emirates Thalassemia Society.
This initiative aims to ensure sustainable, high-quality care for patients who depend on regular blood transfusions and multidisciplinary care, as the two parties will cooperate to achieve a common goal of reducing the financial burden on families not covered by health insurance while maintaining world-class clinical standards.
To integrate patient opinions directly into the healthcare system and promote a supportive, patient-focused environment, the Emirates Thalassemia Society will nominate a patient representative to work at the Thalassemia Center as a social worker. He will support patient education, help organize joint fundraising activities, and will serve as a key link between the two organizations.
The memorandum of understanding focuses on activating joint efforts in awareness, education and media campaigns related to thalassemia, as the two parties will cooperate in initiatives targeting health care workers, patients, their families, and society as a whole to enhance understanding of the disease and modern care methods, enhance screening and early diagnosis, and encourage voluntary blood donation.
Dr. Khaled Youssef Al Khouri said that through cooperation with Burjeel Medical City, the association is strengthening its mission of improving patient outcomes and empowering their families, pointing out that the memorandum of understanding embodies the spirit of cooperation that will advance sustainable progress in the care of thalassemia patients throughout the UAE.
He explained that, within its vision, the Emirates Thalassemia Society seeks to support patients and enable them to enjoy a better life by providing comprehensive care, enhancing community awareness, and encouraging scientific research and strategic partnerships that contribute to the development of treatment and supportive care protocols. The Society also aims to be a national model in human empowerment, in line with the UAE’s trends in improving the quality of healthy life for all members of society.
For his part, Professor Khaled Musallam said that this partnership reflects the shared vision to provide the best medical care and build a supportive and aware society for thalassemia patients and their families, and in cooperation with the Emirates Thalassemia Society, we aim to set new standards for comprehensive and compassionate care.
