The African Peace and Security Council will hold informal consultations tomorrow with the countries of the transitional period

Tomorrow, the Peace and Security Council of the African Union will hold an informal consultation session with the countries undergoing a transitional period, namely: Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Sudan.

This session represents the fourth of its kind, according to what was reported by the Amani Africa periodical, which specializes in African affairs, since the Council included this type of meetings in its working methods in April 2023, following the fourteenth retreat to discuss Working methods in November 2022.

These consultations aim to enable the Council to communicate directly with representatives of the countries whose membership in the activities of the African Union has been suspended due to unconstitutional changes in governance, based on Article (8/11) of the Council Protocol.

The session is expected to discuss the progress achieved and the challenges facing the transition paths since the last meeting held in March 2025.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger are witnessing continued postponement of the transition stages. Political, with escalating tension in its relations with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Council is expected, during tomorrow’s session, to renew its concern about the slow pace of the transition processes, calling on the transitional authorities to accelerate the process and involve all parties, while adhering to the roadmap for each country.

The meeting will also address the close interrelationship between the transition path and confronting escalating security threats, especially in the Sahel region, which faces the growing threat of terrorism.

In this In this context, the Council will discuss ways to enhance coordination between the African Union and ECOWAS. In combating terrorism and supporting stability in the Sahel countries, based on the decisions of previous meetings that recommended establishing a joint security framework and forming a mechanism to follow up on the implementation of the Council’s decisions regarding the region.

It is not expected that this session will issue a final document, in keeping with the informal nature of this type of consultations.
