While Egyptian star Mona Zaki celebrates her forty-eighth birthday today, Tuesday, November 18, critics and audiences are waiting for November 24, with the launch of screenings of the movie “The Woman,” in which the star plays the role of Mrs. Umm Kulthum, in a cinematic story that combines the artistic rise of “Planet of the East” and the personal pressures that accompanied her life.
In the film, written by Ahmed Murad and directed by Marwan Hamed, Mona Zaki discusses important stages in Umm Kulthum’s life, from the beginning of her singing career, until she reached the pinnacle of fame. The film also focuses on her human suffering with a rare disease, hyperthyroidism, which affected her professional and personal life, and threatened her singing future, especially during a period when surgery was the only solution to this disease.
The film “The Woman”, which constitutes a prominent artistic station and an important turning point in the career of a star named Mona Zaki, is expected to be a strong test, as for an audience that does not have mercy on the artist when he retreats or falls. Family…and beginnings:
Mona Zaki is the daughter of a prominent family. Her father is a doctor, and her mother holds a master’s degree in physical education. She is a talented girl. She was born in 1977. She lived most of her childhood years moving between Kuwait, England, and the United States, due to her father’s work. She studied media at Cairo University.
Mona Zaki began acting through Cairo University Theater, and her first artistic work was a play entitled “In Eloquent Arabic” with the artist Mohamed Sobhi, who discovered her talent, before she was among the new artistic discoveries in the late nineties, within what was known as the wave of comedy films for young stars. The film “Sahar al-Layali” was her pass for the Arab audience.
At the beginning of her career, Mona Zaki was keen to play the roles of a girl with an angelic face, and stayed away from sensual roles, or those with negative moral qualities. She made her popularity by performing the characters of middle-class or popular girls in Egypt, which increased the number of her fans, especially among middle-class youth. Among her most prominent artistic works are: the play “Keda Okay” with the artist Hani Ramzy, the movie “My Aunt France” with the artist Abla Kamel, the movie “Abu Ali” with the artist Karim Abdel Aziz, and the films “Taymour and Shafiqa” and “Mafia” with the artist Ahmed El Sakka. Most recently, the film “Flight 404”, which won a large number of cinematic awards.
The audience is still waiting for her meeting with her husband, the star Ahmed Helmy, in a movie, after the idea of them presenting a movie together was raised ten years ago.
